Solon Slams Ona Over Nursing Course

A MILITANT lawmaker has criticized Health Secretary Enrique Ona for downplaying the need for nurses and discouraging incoming college students to take up nursing course.

According to Gabriela Rep. Emmi de Jesus, nurses play a very important role in the national health system and in providing better medical assistance to the people.

De Jesus said that instead of discouraging students to take up nursing course, the government should look for ways on how to provide jobs to nursing graduates since there are many hospitals nationwide that need nurses.  read more »

HB 387 further exacerbates labor export

Gabriela Women's Party Rep. Luz Ilagan criticized House Bill 387, also known as the OFW Liberalization Act of 2007, saying that it exacerbates further Arroyo's labor export program by making it a permanent policy.
 
“The government wants to intensify its efforts in exporting our people instead of generating domestic employment in the economy. With HB 387, government will let go all pretensions with regard to the protection and promotion of the rights of overseas Filipino workers,” Ilagan said.

Ilagan believes that recruitment agencies are one of the most lucrative businesses in the Philippines and that it would be impossible for the government to regulate the payments that they would charge on OFWs.  read more »

“If they will liberalize and hasten the process, there is a possibility that they will charge more,” Ilagan said. She added that recruitment agencies would only implement this on official fees charged to OFWs.
