“The suit filed against the alleged squatting ring in Laperal Compound is clearly a ploy to sidetrack the issue on the recent violation of rights of the Laperal residents. It exposes the Makati government’s failure to face the problems of urban housing with a rights-based perspective,” GWP Rep. Gabriela Women’s Party condemned today the violent eviction by the Makati Public Safety Office (MAPSA), the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), and the SWAT of the urban poor community in Laperal Compound, Guadalupe Viejo, Makati, resulting to the death of a child from asphyxiation and injuring at least 19 individuals.

“Residents of Laperal Compound witnessed how the local government office views informal settlers int he city of Makati as no better than sewer rats,” Rep. De Jesus exclaimed in disgust.
