Solon Slams Ona Over Nursing Course

A MILITANT lawmaker has criticized Health Secretary Enrique Ona for downplaying the need for nurses and discouraging incoming college students to take up nursing course.

According to Gabriela Rep. Emmi de Jesus, nurses play a very important role in the national health system and in providing better medical assistance to the people.

De Jesus said that instead of discouraging students to take up nursing course, the government should look for ways on how to provide jobs to nursing graduates since there are many hospitals nationwide that need nurses.

“Nurses should not be viewed solely as commodities in the government’s labor export policy,” De Jesus said.

“There may be a downsizing in the demand for nurses from countries that have traditionally required them, but the local health system continues to be in dire need of their services,” she added.
