Gabriela representative Liza Maza confirmed on Saturday that she is running for Senator in the 2010 elections under their newly formed Makabayan coalition.

Maza, who was in Bacolod for a nationwide campaign against the proposed constituent assembly, said that she will run with Bayan Muna Representatives Satur Ocampo and Tedoro Casiño.

She said they are also set to fill up posts for local candidates.

The Makabayang Koalisyon ng Mamamayan (Makabayan), launched in April this year, is composed of multi-sectoral groups including Gabriela, Bayan Muna, Anakpawis, ACT Teachers, COURAGE and Kabataang Pinoy.

It aims to fight for people’s empowerment, transparency and accountability in governance, uplifting the poor, developing a strong and self-reliant domestic economy, a more equitable wealth distribution, save the environment and defend sovereignty, uphold human rights and pursue just and lasting peace, she said.

Maza also disclosed that a nationwide mass mobilization is set on July 27 in time for the President’s State of the Nation address to air opposition against Constitutional Assembly (HB 1109).

“We should not be complacent because an earnest desire to convene the constituent assembly to retain the President is still there,” she said.

She also said Gabriela is in favor of poll automation to ease the fear of rigging the election results. However, she emphasized that the Commission on Elections should make the process of poll automation more transparent and verifiable.

The COMELEC should lay down all the systems that they will use in the poll automation so it would be clear for the people, she also said.*APN
