“Pushing for Charter Change at a time when US submarines carrying nuclear weapons are docking on our shores and mining multinationals are rejoicing over an executive order that practically perpetuates the destructive Philippine mining act of 1995 indicates a US-instigated agenda of plunder.”
This is according to Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Luz Ilagan as leaders of both Houses of Congress begin talks on the possibility of initiating amendments to the Philippine Constitution.
According to Ilagan, President Aquino has been consenting to too many Constitutional violations, ranging from the entry of US warships and submarines equipped with nuclear warheads and the unli-presence of US troops down to granting of too many concessions and smoke-screened ownership of land, utilities and big businesses by foreign multinationals.
“Lantaran nang nilalabag ang Konstitusyon kaya kailangan nang maniobrahin ang pagbabago nito.”
“Public Private Partnership, an Aquino centerpiece that allows multinationals and big business interests to interfere with the delivery of basic social services and public utilities tends to run counter with the Constitution’s protectionist economic provisions,” Ilagan explained.
Charter Change proponents are pushing for various amendments including:
• the lifting of the 60-40 equity rule and allowing foreigners to own 100 percent of public utilities in the telecommunications, power and other sectors
• allowing foreigners to own 100 percent of residential houses and land as well as commercial and industrial lands
• opening up foreign investments to media entities and educational institutions
“Landless, unemployed and impoverished Filipinos will not benefit from any moves to amend the Constitution,” concluded Ilagan.
