The government deserves all the criticisms and protests generated by the Cybercrime Law because it technically paves the way for electronic martial law. People have been arrested, tortured, killed and disappeared under different administrations because they were not afraid to speak the truth and for criticizing harmful government policies. With the Cyber Crime Law, there is a possibility that these will escalate,” said GWP Rep. Emmi De Jesus as people’s organizations today file a case before the Supreme Court questioning the constitutionality of RA 10175.
De Jesus supports the position that the Cybercrime law violates the people’s Constitutional rights to free speech and privacy. She further stressed that the social media is free precisely to allow ordinary people to express their personal views on different social issues. “Applying the traditional standards of libel will only choke this freedom.”
“The Aquino government, instead of working on laws that protect human rights, came up with a law that endangers the most basic human right to expression. “Sa pamamagitan ng batas na ito, tinitiyak ng Pangulo na ang kanyang daan na di na nga matuwid, ay' tahimik na tahimik pa'.”
The Gabriela solon ended by saying that everybody should be more vigilant in guarding our freedom, and public awareness about this law should be raised as this law infringes our right to freedom of speech and expression.###
