Maza seeks investigation on LTO’s RFID chips

Rep. Liza Maza of Gabriela Women’s Party yesterday filed House Resolution No. 1429 directing the House Committees on Transportation and Information and Communications Technology to investigate the impending implementation of the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology san wider public consultation and public advisory and which allegedly underwent shady bidding process.
Maza said that there is neither sufficient information nor public advisory and wide public consultation on the RFID project before its impending implementation in October even as the motorists are the ones to bear the cost of paying the RFID tags.
“Vehicle owners will be forced to shell out P350 for each vehicle when they renew their vehicle registration. This is indeed an added burden that motorists will have to shoulder,” Maza said.
The Gabriela solon also stressed the sentiments of concerned transport and motorists sectors as to the absence of transparency in the acquisition and implementation of the project.
The resolution further states that apparently the implementation of the RFID might violate the constitutional right to privacy mainly because it does not ensure the secrecy of the information to be kept by LTO, that other people will not be able to access such data or information. It also reads that this technology might become a way of some corrupt officials, crook traffic officers and other dubious persons who have direct access to the RFID data base and information to use the information against the owners of the vehicles. ###
