Rep. Liza Maza of Gabriela Women’s Party today condemned the reported brutal killing of at least forty-four (44) people including seventeen (17) women and lawyers Cynthia Oquendo and Connie Brizuela who are both members of the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) in Maguindanao. They were among the group of more than 50 local politicians, journalists and lawyers allegedly abducted by several heavily armed men.

“We condemn in the strongest terms this massacre in Maguindanao. We call on the authorities to immediately help and secure the rest of the victims who are still under hostage. Their safety and security should be government’s top priority now,” Maza said.

As to the possiblity that this senseless violence was caused by rivalry between powerful political clans in Maguindanao, Maza also called on an immediate investigation so as to bring to justice all those responsible for this crime.

“Kailangang managot at maparusahan ang gumawa ng karumaldumal na krimen na ito,” said Maza.

Maza also expressed her sympathy to the victims and their families and vowed her utmost support in their call for justice.###
