GWP challenges President Aquino to unburden poor Filipinos from the heavy cross of landlessness and unemployment

As President Aquino celebrated Easter by reminding Filipinos of the message of Easter so that “boulder of problems that bedevil our national existence is rolled away,” GWP Representative De Jesus challenged President Aquino to stop trying to escape the poor’s economic problems through subsidies and dole-outs.

“The message of Easter for poor people, who have almost nothing except the clothes on their back, is the promise of a life of dignity and not mendicancy. Millions of poor farmers, including their wives and children, would be unburdened by the daily cross they bear if only the administration seriously supports the genuine land reform bill currently pending in Congress. Hundreds of thousands of poor workers and their families would be liberated from joblessness and overcome the boulder of Calvary if the Aquino administration works at creating local and national industries that will open up jobs here in our own land, and address depressed wages that are so unjust and exploitative,” explained GWP Rep. De Jesus.

“It is not the role of President Aquino to provide dole outs to the poor. That is the prerogative of the church. As leader of the land, it is Aquino’s duty to put a stop to the sufferings of poor Filipinos by supporting policies and programs that respect their dignity and protect their rights as human beings,” Rep. De Jesus ended.###
