Gabriela Women’s Party Representatives Liza Maza and Luz Ilagan today join the big interfaith rally against Charter Change in Makati to oppose the moves of Malacañang and its allies to extend the term of President Arroyo beyond 2010.
“Undeniably, all these sinister strategies for charter change would clearly benefit President Arroyo and her cohorts. It is never an act directed to resolve the pressing concerns of extreme poverty, rising unemployment, massive human rights violations and systemic corruption in the government. This will only worsen the plight of the Filipino people knowing that the brains behind this plot have nothing but greed and guilt,” Maza lamented.
The Gabriela Solon also acknowledged the recent developments in the Senate junking the Con-ass moves in the lower house in opoposition to Malacañang’s dubious ends. The Senate resolution which states that “any attempt by the House of Representatives to unilaterally propose amendments to, or revision of, the Constitution without the approval by three-fourths of the Senate voting separately is unconstitutional” strengthens the resistance against charter change.
Consequently, Gabriela Womens Party, together with Bayan Muna, Anakpawis and several other lawmakers have filed House Resolution 888 rejecting "any amendments and all moves to amend the 1987 Constitution before the 2010 elections including the proposed convening of Congress into a constituent assembly”.
Rep.Maza expressed that the resounding rejection against Charter change only manifests the people’s clamor against Pres. Arroyo's administration.“The Filipino people have had enough of Mrs. Arroyo. She might have maliciously maneuvered her way out of the impeachment but she can never escape accountability from the Filipino people.”###
