Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Luz Ilagan underscored the need for women and children’s access to healthcare in a forum at the Western Mindanao State University in Zamboanga City. “The Aquino Health Agenda and its direction towards the privatization and corporatization of government hospitals will deprive women and children of much needed healthcare services. This puts the delivery of healthcare in a state of calamity.”
According to Ilagan, allowing business and corporate interests to interfere in the delivery of healthcare will make services more expensive, thus more inaccessible. “Hospitals will be run to ensure profit and not to ensure the delivery of service.” The Gabriela solon illustrates this point by comparing the rates of laboratory services and procedures in corporatized hospitals with public hospitals.
“A Transvaginal ultrasound, which many doctors require of pregnant women, costs P1800 when done at the corporatized Philippine Heart Center. The same service costs only P750 in Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.”
Ilagan likewise fears the spread of common, curable illnesses especially in areas recently struck by flooding and calamities, like Zamboanga City. “The need for healthcare is magnified when calamity strikes, more so in far-flung provinces and poor communities. We can expect an increase in the incidence of water-borne illnesses, cholera and diarrhea as well as leptospirosis. In many areas, the incidence of dengue has also increased,” said Ilagan.
“The dismal state of health in our country, especially in calamity areas will not be properly addressed by the government’s abandonment of its responsibility to provide healthcare.” #
