Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela Rep. Liza Maza today denounced Malacañang’s scheme of rewarding retired soldiers with key government positions and at Palparan’s possible appointment in the Dangerous Drugs Board.“The Arroyo administration’s brazen support for Palparan only exposes its culpability and complicity in the spate of human rights violations committed with all impunity under her rule. Malacañang’s policy of gratifying notorious generals with bloody record in murdering its critics and innocent civilians instead of convicting them manifests its inutility,” Maza said.

“It is indignity and a great insult to the public to have a butcher like Palparan run the affairs of DDB or any government post given his unresolved cases of extra-judicial killings and forced disappearance. He should be sent behind bars so he could start paying for his crimes.”

The Gabriela solon together with other progressive legislators vowed to block the appointment of Palparan and other retired soldiers in any government posts as this has been seen as another grandiose plot of the Arroyo administration for 2010.

The Gabriela solon earlier filed House Bill 2603 which seeks to prohibit retired and active military and police personnel from being appointed to positions of secretary, undersecretary, head, or member of governing bodies of government-controlled corporations and other agencies, although it does not seek to bar them from running for public office.
