“Let us not allow the US-instigated terror paranoia to justify the return of US troops and the reestablishment of US military bases in the country.”
This was the statement of Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Luz Ilagan as she called on the Aquino government not to allow more expansive and intensified US military presence and intervention in the country. This, as the US government issued warnings and advisories to its citizens all over the world following the death of Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.
“Bin Laden’s death does not put an end to the US-instigated wars of aggression and intervention. On the contrary, the terror continues, as the US exploits the news of Bin Laden’s death,” said Ilagan.
The Gabriela solon likewise expressed apprehension amid the stealthy meetings during the four-day visit of US senators Daniel Inouye and Thad Cochran who met with President Aquino, Senate President Enrile, Foreign Affairs Secretary del Rosario, Olongapo city officials and Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) executives.
“There is no doubt on the US’ continued interest in maintaining presence and rebuilding its bases. Now, the US government will continue to sow paranoia all over the world as it continues to stake claim and maintain strategic geophysical presence in various fronts including the Southeast Asian region, specifically the Philippines. The challenge now is for the Aquino government to resist further US intervention and travesty of our sovereignty.”
