On The CA's Confirmation Of Sec. Raul Gonzales

Women's partylist group Gabriela expressed today its disappointment over the Commission on Appointment's confirmation of Department of Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales.

"The CA's obvious leniency in the screening of government officials sets low and embarassing standards on the kind of public officials that the Arroyo government requires among its ranks," said Gabriela Women's Party Secretary General Cristina Palabay.

Palabay explained, "Secretary Gonzales is one who has gained notoriety for irresponsibly uttering sexist, discriminatory and uncalled for remarks. He is one who openly practices partisan politics and plays a very active part in the persecution of the critics of the Arroyo government. By doing so, he contributes to the impunity with which these killings, abductions and persecution targets activists, human rights workers and the legitimate opposition."

It can be recalled that Secretary Gonzales drew flak for his chauvinist statements against actress Kris Aquino and the former President Cory Aquino. He likewise has been repeatedly dubbed as the secretary of the Department of Injustice, for his statements and maneuverings against cases involving activists, leaders and members of progressive partylist organizations. #
